Operated by Ray Riepen, it is located in the former Moondial Coffee House in the Parker Memorial Building at 53 Berkeley Street. The headline performer is Willie “Loco” Alexander and The Lost. It is reputed to be the first rock nightclub on the East Coast. Timothy Crouse later writes, “The opening night of the Tea Party is without a doubt the most important date in Boston rock and roll history.” Performers include the Jeff Beck Group, the Byrds, Cream, Fleetwood Mac, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Santana, Traffic, Sly and the Family Stone, The Velvet Underground, The Who and Frank Zappa. The club moves to 15 Lansdowne Street in July 1969, and closes with a show headlined by Sha Na Na on December 29, 1970.
